Child Passenger Seat Safety
Members from the Locust Fire Department, Locust Police Department and Stanfield Police Department recently completed a two day Car Passenger Safety Awareness Class. This class was sponsored by the Office of State Fire Marshall and Locust Fire Department. National statistics show that greater than 85% of Child Restraint Systems are incorrectly installed. Given the number one cause of death for children 14 years and under is motor vehicle crashes, it is imperative that injury prevention efforts be aimed at decreasing those numbers. This class was an awareness level training program to promote child passenger safety awareness. This class provided basic knowledge and CPS technical skills. It also helped explain state law and how to provide basic instructions to parents on correct child restraint use. After completing this class, participants will be able to help parents install seats and answer basic safety questions. If you would like to have you car seat checked you may stop by the station to see if someone is available to assist you. Locust is a volunteer department, so there may be times when no one is available to help you at that time. You are welcome to call 704-888-2033 and leave your name and number and then someone will call you to set up a time to meet. We are planning to have another car seat check sometime in September, so keep a check in the paper. You can also log on to www.locustfire.org for more information about fire safety, car seats, and many other topics.
